A Small Publisher's Observations on Amazon and the Over-Production of AI Generated Content – aka “AI Slop”

A Small Publisher's Observations on Amazon and the Over-production of AI Generated Content – aka “AI Slop”

Over the last year or two, the phenomenon of “AI Slop” has increased significantly. For those few who haven’t yet been introduced to the term, it refers to content (text, code, pictures and video) that has been generated by generative AI algorithms. These are enormous deep-learning neural-net based programs that are fed tremendous amounts of data (called ‘training data’) that then generate new data, based on the input prompts given by human users.

There are a lot of issues with this process that generally fall into the categories of financial, ecological and social. There is a lot that can be said on any of these categories, but in this blog I am focusing on the social side, though that naturally has interactions with the financial and ecological sides of the question. My main issue will be about how generative AI is affecting human-created creative efforts and how the use of the technology is affecting the platforms (such as Amazon) that are used to transmit and market these creative efforts.

For what it is worth, here are some personal observations from running a small book business, primarily on Amazon:

  • Over the last couple of years, the amount of our free promotion downloads has declined quite significantly, by about half.

  • On the other hand, the amount of our paid sales (purchase and page-reads) has held fairly steady.

  • New books seem to be harmed more than older books. This is partly due to the proliferation of content in general, but this has been super-accelerated by AI slop.

  • One gets the impression that people are using publication date as a way to filter out AI generated content.

  • If this is the case, Amazon and similar sites should make a policy of forcing people to identify AI usage when they upload. They already require this information when uploading a book, but they don’t seem to be revealing it to potential customers.

  • This is probably a good example of how companies are conflicted – they want the increased content of AI generated content , but don’t want people to know which stuff is AI generated. In the long run, I don’t see how they can have it both ways.

On a related matter, I have noticed a lot of content on Quora that seems to be AI generated. I tend to avoid that and its prevalence on the site has made me less willing to contribute my own content and/or consume other content.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

An article from the Globe and Mail (sourced as New York Times News Service) provides much of the data for the comments below. The title of the article is “Like many consumers, tech giants are sick of AI slop”.

The article goes on to describe the problems that companies such as Google, Meta (e.g. Facebook) and Amazon are having with generative AI content swamping their sites. These include things like google searches, Amazon’s book platform and Facebook’s feed. Naturally, there are plenty more companies facing the same problem (e.g. most other social media sites). It is, of course, ironic that the very companies that are spending extraordinary amounts of money and other resources on AI development are also being harmed by the output of these technologies. The phrase “hoist on their own petard” comes to mind.

Here are a few examples of what these companies have done:

  • Spotify removed tens of millions of “spammy” uploads, presumably generated by AI or at least facilitated by AI in the upload process.

  • Linkedin has added a button for users to notify them of content that seems like it was generated by AI.

  • Youtube had wiped hundreds of thousands of channels in recent months, that appear to be low-quality AI generated ‘slop’.

  • TikTok has removed hundreds of thousands of videos recently for violating their AI policies.

  • Messaging apps, review sites, academic archives and dating services are also attempting to get rid of AI generated spam and slop.

  • App sites (such as the Apple store) are being flooded with vibe-coded content, another type of AI generated content.

  • X has banned apps that facilitate AI slop (it is estimated that over half of short tweets (less than 50 words) are AI generated).

  • Substack is actively scanning posts for AI useage.

  • Unfortunately, the article doesn’t say what Amazon is doing about slop, though it does note that it is an ongoing concern for them.

The article goes on to note that these companies have mixed and contrary strategies and incentives. On the one hand, AI generated content can initially increase engagement on their sites, just by sheer volume. That can mean gains in revenue and/or investment dollars. However, people can quickly tire of this deluge of AI slop and turn away for using the site. That can negate all those gains and ultimately poison the site.

This might all be considered part of the “tragedy of the commons”. Slop is cheap (sometimes free) to make and market. That attracts slop developers who see a quick buck, that is there for the taking. That works for a while, but the profusion of slop soon saturates the site and people then tend to desert it.

This problem may resolve itself, once the AI investment bubble is over. If Tech companies have to recover costs and make sustainable profits, the cost of using generative AI may become too high to be profitable for the slop producers. As an example, if it takes a lot of energy and computer chips to produce a novel, it may well be cheaper for novels to be written exclusively by humans.

There is also the fact that humans just naturally seem to dislike AI generated content, once the novelty wears off. This may also lead to the reduction, if not elimination, of AI slop.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

And here is a science-fiction novel, featuring a galactic AI threat which might well be considered the ultimate in the AI threat (the book itself is human-generated).

The Magnetic Anomaly – A Science Fiction Novel

The novel version of The Magnetic Anomaly is now available on Amazon (ebook, print version, also audible version soon to come).

Summary

Two young Earth scientists, Alex and Mary, get caught up in a vast conflict, based on an accidental finding that they make at a diamond exploration camp in the far north. Eventually, this discovery leads them on a perilous quest and involvement in an interstellar war, a conflict of literally cosmic proportions with a rogue AI, which considers itself duty-bound to destroy sentient life (or, from its point of view, liberate sentient life).

During this time, they encounter a variety of enigmatic persons, as well as other entities, all of whom are also engaged in this struggle. With some of them they end up allying; with others, they contend in deadly conflict. The struggle takes them around the world, and eventually into the far reaches of the solar system.

During this time their relationship continues to evolve and deepen. Circumstances demand that they grow in courage and confidence, though within the scope of (mostly) normal people, as has been the case for countless people throughout history.

The story also showcases some historical events, relating to different versions of what went on in Antarctica, shortly after World War 2. Several versions of these events, official and unofficial UFO lore are given. This becomes a springboard to much of the action. Some philosophical and scientific concepts are also explored, though not in such a way as to get in the way of the plot.

Where the Apple Falls, An Easter Story, now on Audible

Where the Apple Falls, An Easter Story, now on Audiobook (Amazon)

It is set at Easter and has some family-related themes that relate indirectly to Easter, but it doesn’t have to be Easter for to you to enjoy it and you don’t have to be particularly religious, either.Where the Apple Falls.  On e-book and audiobook.

Where the Apple Falls, An Easter Story

This short story (approx. 6500 words) focuses on the complex and somewhat troubled relations between children, parents, and grandparents.  It also revolves around the mysterious forces of the universe, including the various notions of the divine held by the people in the story, which sometimes conflict, much as they do in the world in general.  An Easter service and a freshly planted apple tree draw the parties together, over one fateful Easter weekend.

The story is just 99 cents U.S. (or equivalent in other currencies) and is also available on Kindle Unlimited. It is periodically on free promotion on Amazon as well.

The Stalkers, now on Audiobook (Amazon)

The Stalkers, now on Audiobook (Amazon)

A crime story. Quite noir in style, not for the faint-hearted. A sort of rough justice is done by the end, but with a twist.

The Stalkers Blurb

A sexual predator stalks the city. He has chosen his unwary victim - he waits, he watches, he stalks. But, who stalks the stalker?

I wrote this some time back, when there were a number of rapes in the Toronto Scarborough area by someone who became known as “the balcony rapist”. At the time, he hadn’t been caught yet, though he was arrested later, for these and other horrible crimes.

So, the story is fictional, but loosely based on that era’s events, though with purely imagined plot twists. I suppose this was a sort of fictional rumination on evil, attempting to get into the mind of such a person. But, even after writing a million words, I doubt that it is possible to get into a mind like that.

This is a short story of about 6000 somewhat disturbing words.

Love at the Lake, Part 2, now on Audiobook (Amazon)

One way to forgive and forget, after the events in Love at the Lake (Part 1).  Now on audible, on Amazon.  It's about an hour's listening.

Love at the Lake Part 2 - A Mid-Summer Morning's Dream at the Lake

Here is another wonderful story by writer Helena Puumala, one of her warm, emotional “at the Lake” stories. It is a sequel to “Love at the Lake”, which involved the consequences of marital infidelity, real and imagined, within the relationships of two young couples.

What happens next? Can love be recovered after thoughtless betrayal? Perhaps, but only with a little help from a mysterious dark haired woman, in this modern-day spin of a fairy tale for adults.

This is a short story, of about 9000 words, suitable to be read in about 45 minutes to an hour, by a typical reader. It is priced at 99 cents U.S., equivalent price in other currencies. It is also available on Kindle Unlimited and is periodically offered as a free promotion.

Terminal Lucidity, Now on Audiobook (Amazon)

Terminal Lucidity, Now on Audiobook (Amazon)

The short science fiction story “Terminal Lucidity” is now on audiobook, via Amazon, as well as in ebook format. It is also something of a whodunit mystery, set on a distant planet.

It is about a bit over an hour of listening on audiobook, somewhat less when read in ebook form.

Terminal Lucidity – SF Short Fiction, on Amazon

A lone agent is discovered orbiting a newly discovered exoplanet. Though his mind has been badly damaged, it is believed to hold vital secrets about a threatening alien species. But, can the medical staff uncover these secrets in time to prevent an interstellar war? Might one of them be a saboteur, working for the other side? And will their efforts, if successful, mean death for the agent and tragedy for his young daughter?

“We have reason to believe that the last expedition had made contact with the aliens and had gained some vital intelligence about them. We know that, but that’s all we know. All other contact with the expedition was lost before we received any of the details.

“Agent X was the only surviving member of that expedition. A rescue team found him on a small craft, orbiting Mendel. He couldn’t even speak and he soon fell into a coma, the state in which he was when you began your treatments. His mind was very diseased.”

“And you need us to dig that information out of his diseased mind,” Louise said.

The General nodded.

“Yes, the loss of our missions now seem to indicate that we are in a state of undeclared war with this species, a cold war if you will. But there are signs of hyper-space disruption in this system, all out of proportion to the limited activities of our spacecraft. We fear that the alien species may be mobilizing. A hot war may follow at any time. Earth may even be a target, as they could have calculated our originating location from the trail of our own spacecrafts’ hyper-space disruptions. If not from that, then perhaps from our electromagnetic signals, whether in hyper-space or normal space. We just don’t know.”

“Thus, the urgency,” Charles said. “Thus, Terminal Lucidity.”

The story is about 13,000 words, or about 60 or so minutes at typical reading speeds.

It’s 99 cents U.S., equivalent price in other currencies. It is also available on Kindle Unlimited and is periodically on a free promotion.

Beyond the Blue Door Part 2 (Behind the Locked Door), Now on Audiobook (Amazon)

Beyond the Blue Door Part 2 (Behind the Locked Door), Now on Audiobook (Amazon)

Beyond the Blue Door Part 2 (Behind the Locked Door) is now on audiobook, via Amazon. It is a continuation of the Beyond the Blue Door story, but set several decades in the future. The character Jenny is revisited, along with her sister Molly, along with some new parties. In this part of the story, the characters go through some harrowing experiences, but also eventually gain the opportunity for a happier and more hopeful future.

Beyond the Locked Door (Beyond the Blue Door, Part 2)

This story is titled “Beyond the Blue Door, Part 2”, as it is a companion piece to Helena Puumala’s original story “Beyond the Blue Door”. In that story, the teenage girl Jennie takes refuge from domestic abuse in a perhaps illusory, perhaps supernatural, world that she has discovered that exists beyond a hidden blue door in an old farmhouse. The story can be interpreted in many ways – the Blue Door may represent a psychological escape mechanism for a traumatized youth, or it may represent a transition to a hopeful alternative reality. The conclusion to the story can be read either way.

Part 2 of Jennie’s story tends to the latter interpretation and expands on it by introducing several new characters and a new framework for the action. This also opens up the opportunity for the character of Jennie to be explored in a new direction, within which she can exercise a more active role, in concert with the other new characters. It also explores some different perspectives on the nature of good and evil, as well as the potential for love in even the most harrowing of circumstances.

The story stands on its own, but it is perhaps best read after reading Part 1. Together, the two stories clock in at about 20,000 words, independently at about 10,000 each.

The Haunted Park, Now on Audiobook (Amazon)

The Haunted Park, Now on Audiobook (Amazon)

The Haunted Park is now on audiobook, via Amazon. It is a nice little ghost story, fun to listen to, perhaps during a late night drive down an isolated country road.

The Haunted Park

This story is composed of two interconnected narratives, with Part 1 describing a tragic family situation that is resolved by the events in Part 2. The families involved are separated in both time and space, but their fates intertwine in this location which has become known by the locals as "the haunted park". Philosophically, the story explores the notion of a ghosts and the afterlife from a several different perspectives.  And of course, it is just a satisfying ghost story.

The characters in Part 2 are also found in Helena Puumala’s selection of ‘Lake’ stories, entitled Five Holiday Mysteries”. The characters unique and special backgrounds, personalities and abilities are explored more fully in those stories, though this story can be read as a stand-alone ghost story.

The story is about 7500 words, which can be read within about 45 minutes to an hour, at typical reading speeds.

The Zoo Hypothesis or The News of the World – A Science Fiction Story, Now on Audiobook (Amazon)

The Zoo Hypothesis or The News of the World – A Science Fiction Story, Now on Audiobook (Amazon)

A lighthearted, but also kind of serious, look at why we don’t hear from all the aliens that must be out there.  The people that we tested it out on, found the audible version to be quite amusing - plus, includes intelligent dogs and who doesn't like that?

The Zoo Hypothesis or The News of the World

We present a story giving a possible scenario for the so-called Zoo Hypothesis, an explanation similar to that known in Star Trek lore as the Prime Directive. It’s an explanation sometimes given to account for a mystery in the Search for Intelligent Life, known as The Great Silence, or Fermi’s Paradox.

Basically, Enrico Fermi argued (quite convincingly, to many observers), that there had been ample time for an alien intelligence to colonize the galaxy since its formation, so where are they? The Zoo Hypotheses says that they are out there, but have cordoned off the Earth from contact, until we are sufficiently evolved or culturally advanced to handle the impact of alien contact.

This story takes a humorous tongue in cheek approach to that explanation. It also features dogs and sly references to Star Trek. Talk about man’s Best Friend.

It is only 99 cents U.S., equivalent price in other currencies. It is also available on Kindle Unlimited and is sometimes on a free promotion.

A Spirit in the Forest (at the Lake) – A Fathers and Grandfathers Day Ghost Story, now on Audiobook (Amazon)

A Spirit in the Forest (at the Lake) – A Fathers and Grandfathers Day Ghost Story, now on Audiobook (Amazon)

A nice Fathers (and Grandfathers) Day story, with a bit of a hopeful twist. It doesn’t have to be Fathers Day – you can read it at any time of the year.

A Spirit in the Forest

This short story (approx. 6000 words) relates a trek along a lakefront path by a grandfather and his grandson. The simple lakeside walk becomes a journey of discovery, whereby they each learn much about the other, strengthening the bond between themselves in the process. When a medical crisis occurs, they, along with the boy’s father and the rest of the family and friends, learn something about the mysterious forces of the universe, about life and death, and about hope for the future.

The story is set in a Northern Ontario lake community, and continues to explore the setting and characters introduced in “The Boathouse Christ”, “Where the Apple Falls” and “A Christmas Miracle at the Lake”, also by Helena Puumala.

It is priced at a very reasonable 99 cents U.S., with equivalent pricing in other currencies. It is also available on Amazon Unlimited and is periodically offered on a free promotion.
