A Trip to Vancouver and Vancouver Island

Vancouver, British Columbia, on the west coast of Canada, is one of the top tourist destinations in the country. In addition, it generally rates highly on lists of top tourist destinations in North America. It has both beautiful scenery and an energetic urban vibe, as well as being a major international seaport. It is the headquarters of several significant international corporations and has a world-class research university.

Vancouver Island is also a major tourist draw. It has an incredible diversity of amazing scenery, among which are as several world-famous hiking trails and spectacular beaches. Victoria is a thriving city, but it still has a quaint feel to it. The smaller communities are also very scenic, with an interesting mix of environmentalists and people who work in natural resources.

This is an account of a roughly two-week visit to the area. It includes time spent in Vancouver, Victoria, Tofino, Port Alberni and Port Renfrew. Some of the major hiking trails are sampled (via day-hikes), including the West Coast Trail, the Juan de Fuca Marine Trail and trails on Grouse Mountain. Also included are accounts of the amazing salmon migration in Goldstream Park, a long walk along the Vancouver seawall, visits to the giant old-growth forests of Vancouver Island, Long Beach near Tofino and the Butchart Gardens in Victoria.
