Orion with an iPad

I continue to find the capabilities of the iPad camera quite anazing.  Here is a picture of Orion taken early in the morning, a few days ago.

If you look hard, you can see Sirius in the bottom left corner, and Orion in the centre of the picture.  The belt of Orion is pretty easy to make out, as are Rigel, Betelgeuse and Bellatrix.  Some of Orion's dimmer stars, to the right and above are also apparently visible.  I labelled some of these stars in the second version of the photo.

To see this, you have to take an iPad photo of Orion when the seeing is good.  Then, you have to push the image in an imaging processing program, like GIMP or even iPad's own photo editing app.  Turn the brightness and contrast way up, and the stars will come out.

While you are at it, consider reading Kati of Terra, the story of a feisty young Earth woman, making her way in that big, bad, beautiful universe out there.
