Jupiter's moon Ganymede and Love and Intrigue Under the Seven Moves of Kordea

Helena Puumala's SF Romance series features the planet Kordea, home to a race of beautiful and powerful psychic aliens, known as the Witches of Kordea.  The planet has seven moons, an extraordinary arrangement for a terrestrial sized planet in its star's habitable zone, as is noted in Book 1, which you can get from the link below :).

http://www.amazon.com/The-Witches-Stones-Book-One-ebook/dp/B008PNIRP4

In fact, the moons of Kordea become a central element in Book 2, soon to come out.  The cover below actually borrows the moon Ganymede, one of the moons of Jupiter.  I will by testing out different moons for the cover of the Witches' Stones Book 2, so this gives me the opportunity to do a mini-tour of some of the major moons of our own amazing solar system.

Here are a few facts about Ganymede, courtesy of Wiki:
  • It's the largest moon in the solar system and the largest in Jupiter's system.
  • It is one of the four original moons discovered by Gallileo (thus, referred to a a Gallilean moon).
  • It is the third farthest from Jupiter of the four Galilean moons.  It is easy to find in a smaller telescope.
  • It has its own magnetosphere (magnetic field), the only moon known to have one. This causes auroras around the poles (northern/southern lights).
  • It participates in a 1:2:4 orbital resonance with the two Galilean moons closest to Jupiter, Io and Europa. That means, for every one time Ganymede goes around Jupiter, Europa goes around twice and Io goes around four times.
  • The orbital resonances among these moons is the main reason why they have internal oceans. The flexing of the moons, due to the tidal interactions caused by the resonance, create heat, which keeps the oceans liquid. These are many kilometers underneath an icy crust, which acts as an insulating blanket.
  • Having said that, for Ganymede, radiogenic (radioactive elements) heating is important as well.
  • Ganymede is actually larger than Mercury, but only has about half of that planet’s mass (Mercury is much denser and has a large iron core).
  • That being said, Ganymede also has a liquid iron-rich core.
  • It is also composed or silicate rock and ice (thus it is less dense than Mercury).
  • It has an internal ocean, which probably contains more water than the Earth’s oceans.
  • About one third of it is heavily cratered and dark, with the rest lighter. The lighter regions are evidence of tectonic activity, related to tidal heating.
  • It is mostly rock and ice, and has a subsurface saltwater ocean.
  • The presence of a deep ocean is inferred from its interactions with Jupiter's magnetic field, best explained by a highly conductive fluid at depth.
  • It is tidally locked with Jupiter, like our moon is with Earth.  That means the same side always faces the planet.
  • Its albedo is about 43% (about 43% of the light falling on it is reflected).
Here's a recent picture of Ganymede, taken by NASA's Galileo probe in 1987.

And here is Ganymede, standing in for Kordea's moon, Lina, as it is put in peril in The Witches' Stones Book 2: Love and Intrigue Under the Seven Moons of Kordea.

And don't forget, "On the Road with Bronco Billy - A Trucking Journal" is free this weekend on Amazon.  It may be the best short book about a truck driver and statistician taking a road trip through western North America that you will ever read.  :)

A trucking/math comic and "On the Road with Bronco Billy", free until Sunday

Sometimes it's like the genius writer of the XKCD comics lives in my head.  Here's one about truckers and statisticians  (well math/physics nerds anyway), as are the main characters in "Bronco Billy".  Note, in Bronco Billy, truckers and math nerds get along:

Predicting Black Swan Events from Statistics and the Publishing Busness

As you might know, a Black Swan event is something that is unexpected, difficult to predict from trend analysis.  Stock market crashes are a case in point.

Yesterday, we had an election in my province, where a party that had been in power for 44 years (yes, you read that right) was thrown over for a totally new party.  While people thought it had to happen sooner or later, it still took a lot of people by surprise.

But below is a graph that might be a good indicator of a Black Swan event's likely occurrence.   It shows the accelerating turnover of leaders of the party.  Interestingly enough, the function looks to be a lot like a power law, though naturally the domain and range are quite restricted.  Power laws show up freqently in human affairs, so perhaps this shouldn't be a surprise.

Basically, the graph seems to be saying, that as the Black Swan event approaches, the underlying system grows unstable, and at an accelerating pace.  In this instance, the political party in question took to changing leaders frequently, as it felt its grip on power eroding.  No doubt this was partly due to infighting at the top, but it was probably also a sort of flailing in the collective unconscious of the party..

So, what does this say about publishing.  Simply, that as disruption grows more severe in the business of producing and distributing books, we should expect to see these sorts of phenomena occurring - changes in CEOs, companies being quickly bought and sold, rapid swings in share prices, shorter and shorter stays on the best-seller lists, and so forth.

Watch for these signs, and perhaps profit by them.

What follows is an account of a ten day journey through western North America during a working trip, delivering lumber from Edmonton Alberta to Dallas Texas, and returning with oilfield equipment. The writer had the opportunity to accompany a friend who is a professional truck driver, which he eagerly accepted. He works as a statistician for the University of Alberta, and is therefore is generally confined to desk, chair, and computer. The chance to see the world from the cab of a truck, and be immersed in the truck driving culture was intriguing. In early May 1997 they hit the road.
Some time has passed since this journal was written and many things have changed since the late 1990’s. That renders the journey as not just a geographical one, but also a historical account, which I think only increases its interest.

We were fortunate to have an eventful trip - a mechanical breakdown, a near miss from a tornado, and a large-scale flood were among these events. But even without these turns of fate, the drama of the landscape, the close-up view of the trucking lifestyle, and the opportunity to observe the cultural habits of a wide swath of western North America would have been sufficient to fill up an interesting journal.

The travelogue is about 20,000 words, about 60 to 90 minutes of reading, at typical reading speeds.

For those few people on the Earth who don't know, it is a Star Wars reference, of course.

But perhaps some day, nobody will remember :(.

A Review of the Amazon Reviews & Ratings System

Here's something I did for a Social Media course recently, on the Amazon Reviews and Ratings System.  Since I sometimes do analysis of publishing phenomena, using this data, I thought it might be worth posting the summary for people who don't know some of the background of how the system works.

The "Conversation Prism" is a bit of social media jargon, a way of organizing all the products and tools out there.  You can read more about it at the link below.

And here's a comic that puts out puny human efforts in perspective, vis "Amazon".

======================================================================

About this Tool

Reviews and Ratings are an essential spoke of the Conversation Prism.  These allow people to weigh in on their satisfaction with products and services that they have purchased, as well as the overall experience of purchasing and using those products and services. This constitutes one of the most persuasive and trusted forms of "social proof" - the next best thing to word of mouth, by far the most trusted type of customer information.

The Amazon.com Reviews and Rating facility is one of the largest and most important sites of its type on the internet, Reviews and ratings can be made about any product or service provided by Amazon or one of its third party distributors.  This, of course, includes book reviews.  Some details of the Amazon Review and Rating system are given below.
Among the key factors that a reviewer should include are (according to the Amazon website) are:
  • Give reasons for liking or disliking a product, as well as stating feelings.
  • Be specific.
  • Maintain a proper length, not too long or short (i.e. 75 to 500 words).
  • Be sincere and honest with both praise and criticism.
  • Disclose any potential conflicts of interest (e.g. receiving a free copy of the product).
The Amazon rating system uses a 5 star scale, with 5 being maximum satisfaction.  These ratings are then aggregated and averaged by Amazon, with the result displayed beside the product or service on Amazon’s website.
Amazon reserves the right to remove any reviews or ratings that it deems:
  • to have objectionable or inappropriate content.
  • to be written by someone promoting the product on behalf of the producer, who has a close business or personal relationship with that producer.
  • to be a paid review, though a review of a free or discounted product is acceptable if that is disclosed in the review.

Strengths & Advantages:

The product is used on a daily basis by tens of millions of Amazon customers worldwide.  But the impact goes beyond Amazon's own customer base; for example, a book that has many excellent Amazon reviews will be able to use that social proof in its other promotional efforts.

As noted previously, the big strength of on-line review systems is that they emulate word of mouth recommendations, but in an on-line environment.   They therefore constitute a form of social proof, a key influencer in human decision making.

Perhaps one of the most impressive indications of the strength of Amazon's review system is the amount of attention paid to it by business pundits, academics and statistical analysts.  Its reach among consumers, both in terms of depth (numbers of people) and breadth (variety of products) ensures that it is considered one of the major players in this area of social media.

Weaknesses & Disadvantages:

The primary weakness of Amazon's review system is thought to be its susceptibility to abuse by "gaming the system".  For example, Forbes has written about writers admitting to "sock puppet" reviews (reviews posted by writers using fake names) and writers' using friends and others to "create a buzz" via favourable reviews.  The article also notes the possibility of writers undermining competitors via phoney one star reviews.  Naturally, these problems can also arise with other categories of product and service reviews.
Amazon has attempted to address these concerns on multiple occasions, via cracking down on suspicious reviews and removing them, if it flags them as violating their terms of service, especially as related to reviewers having a conflict of interest.  Indeed, it has recently gone as far as bringing suit against persons that it suspects of selling fake 4 and 5 star reviews.

Budget & Resources Required:

The tool costs nothing on the part of the customer, except the time to read and/or write reviews.  Of course this can be a considerable investment of time for some products.  Some books, for example have tens of thousands of reviews.
As for the producer of the product being reviewed, the cost is free, though it may be smart to devote considerable resources to "reviewing the reviews".  This may vary from informal case by case scrutiny, to complex statistical analysis.
